Aims of the Trust
The Nelson Bay Rotary Club Centennial Scholarship is awarded to residents of the Tomaree Peninsula so that they may improve their knowledge or skills through further study, training or research. The aim is to assist residents to further their careers and their potential value in the local community. In the financial - and Rotary - year 2005-2006 a scholarship to a maximum value of $4,000 may be made available for the purpose of scientific research, further training or skill development. Applicants must demonstrate that the award will have significant benefit to the Nelson Bay locality.
Criteria for the Award:
- Applications can be made by Australian Citizens or permanent residents of Australia who have their main place of residence on the Tomaree Peninsula east of the Tilligerry Bridge OR have completed their secondary education at an educational facility located on the Tomaree Peninsula.
- The scholarship is to support individuals who are undertaking research, training or skills development the results of which will be directly beneficial to the community of the Tomaree Peninsula
- The successful applicant will be required to produce a short final report for personal presentation at a dinner meeting of the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay when they complete their study/training.
- There is no age limit.
Scope of support:
- The Award may be used for equipment, materials, computing charges, travel expenses, fees and any other expenses or costs that relate directly to the project.
- Support services normally expected to be provided by the applicant's employer or institution normally will not be funded.
Awards
- Funding is paid in a single amount.
- The Committee may approve a grant for an amount less than the full amount sought.
- Only one grant will be made for any submission.
Assessment of applications
The Centennial Scholarship Committee of the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay is responsible for the final decision regarding the award of scholarships and there is no right of appeal. The Committee may decide to interview all or only some of the applicants. Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the criteria for the award of the Scholarship and that they are academically qualified to undertake the proposed training. All applicants will be notified in writing of the Committee's decision.
The application is to contain the following information:
- A description of the intended study or research, including the name and address of the educational/training or other facility involved, and the names and telephone numbers of the principal and study adviser.
- The reasons why the applicant considers that the results of the study or research will be directly beneficial to the community on the Tomaree Peninsula.
- The amount of time needed to undertake the study or research project;
- The total cost structure for the study or research including, for example, tuition fees, instruments, books, use of facilities and laboratories, travel expenses, and living expenses.
- The reasons why the applicant considers he or she is unable to complete the study or research without receiving outside financial assistance.
- A resume of the applicant's previous studies, research projects, employment and recreational and social activities
